Intermediate Scent Detection
Quinte Canine offers multi-level scent detection classes and various detection workshops. We also host Sporting Detection Dogs Association (SDDA) Designed Odor Tests (DOTs) and a semi-annual Sporting Detection Dogs Association sanctioned Scent Detection Trials. We encourage and participate in both SDDA and Canadian Kennel Club (CKC) scent detection.
Whether you are looking for a fun activity to focus mental energy or to participate in the sport of scent detection, anyone can enjoy the sport! The dogs in this event learn to search and find specific target odors in hidden locations. Students build confidence to work up to competing with their dog in the detection trials such as those with the Sporting Detection Dogs Association (SDDA) or the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC). Any dog can participate in this class, no prerequisite training or experience is required!
Building not only your dogs confidence, but your handling confidence is important and being able to work with you, no matter what your experience or learning style is, is very important. We want to ensure both you and your dog are having fun! Fun, positive and motivational methods are used. We like to individualize the activities for each handler and dog. Scent work will promote confidence in the dog and provide intense mental stimulation. Sport scent detection is done by all types and breeds of dog.
In the Basic Scent Detection Level 2 and Intermediate classes, we will work on efficient room searches, clearing a room, vehicle searches, higher hides and how to detail with more distractions. Once a dog is ready, we encourage our students to try testing themselves at a Scent Detection Trial, which is an official test of the sport where dogs can earn titles.
Once a team has complete the 3 levels of class they are welcome to join our Advanced Scent Detection Group (aka Super Sniffers) to join additional training class times (practices) and dates at various locations, ask questions, plan trial carpooling, get to know each other better, share fun stories or training bloopers and just have fun!
